Calories and allergens

Calories and allergens on every menu item

Enter them once with the item, and guests see them on the online menu and the table menu beside the price, in the language they read.

Why calories and allergens belong in the item's data

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority asks restaurants to show calories and allergens on their menus. Written only on a printed menu, every recipe change or new item leaves the menu out of date, and a guest with an allergy asks the cashier, who guesses.

In Loqma, calories and allergens are fields on the item itself, like the price. Change them once and they update everywhere the item appears to a guest.

How it works in Loqma

  • Calories beside the price

Enter the calories on the item's page, from the dashboard or the app, and they appear beside the item on the menu and on its page when the guest opens it.

  • 14 allergens from a fixed list

Pick from one list: gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts, soy, fish, shellfish, sesame, celery, mustard, sulphites, lupin, molluscs. A list rather than free text, so one allergen never appears under two spellings.

  • In the guest's language

A guest reading the menu in Arabic sees «ألبان، سمسم», and one reading in English sees "Dairy, Sesame" - the same word you picked in the dashboard.

  • A high-sodium warning

Mark an item as high in sodium and a warning shows on it in the menu, alongside the calories and allergens.

  • Caffeine and activity minutes

Each item has a field for caffeine in milligrams and one for the minutes of activity that burn its calories, so all of the item's nutrition data sits in one place and travels with the menu file.

  • The whole menu in one file

Export the menu as a CSV carrying calories, caffeine, sodium and allergens for every item, edit it in Excel and bring it back. The import tries the file first and tells you which row has an error before anything is saved.

The details that matter for a guest with an allergy

  • The same list in the dashboard, the tablet and the desktop app, so an item is never tagged with two different words
  • An allergen never shows to a guest as a blank or as an English word on the Arabic menu
  • The online menu and the table QR menu show them the same way
  • An item with no calories or allergens set shows nothing, rather than a zero that misleads the guest
  • Editing an item reaches the menu at once, with no new menu to print
  • The import does not stop on one bad row: each row is saved on its own

Calorie and allergen fields are in every plan. Showing them to guests on the online menu and the table menu comes with the online store in the Pro plan. Pricing

Export the menu as a CSV, fill in the calorie, allergen and caffeine columns in Excel, and import it back. Before saving, the import shows you any row with a problem, and it updates existing items by their SKU or name.

At the moment the guest menu shows calories, the high-sodium warning and allergens. Caffeine and activity minutes are kept with the item and travel in the menu file.

Yes. Pick the allergen once, and the menu shows it in Arabic to guests reading Arabic and in English to those reading English, using the same word as the dashboard.
